Reading the route
In Rome, this point-to-point marathon links the major sites of the historic center: the Imperial Forums, the banks of the Tiber, and the approach to the Vatican follow one another along the way.
The start goes off on Via dei Fori Imperiali at 8:30, right by the ancient ruins. The race finishes at the Circo Massimo, just a few hundred meters from the start.
The route first heads south past Piazza Venezia and Piazza della Bocca della Verità, through the Ostiense and Testaccio districts, then follows the Tiber north, crossing several bridges to reach Via della Conciliazione, by the Vatican. It continues north past Piazza Cavour, into the Della Vittoria and Flaminio districts, by Piazzale Clodio.
The way back recrosses the Tiber at Ponte della Musica, along the Lungotevere embankments, then returns to the historic center through Piazza del Popolo, on to Piazza di Spagna, Corso del Rinascimento, and Largo di Torre Argentina, on cobbled and paved streets. Runners have 7 hours to reach the Circo Massimo.
