Reading the route
This marathon is a one-way course that never comes back to where it began. It links Hopkinton, in Massachusetts, to central Boston, entirely on road. Eight towns and municipalities follow one another from end to end.
At 10 am the field sets off from Hopkinton Middle/High School, where the Athletes' Village stands. The opening kilometers lead to Ashland, then Framingham.
Natick comes next, then Wellesley, roughly the halfway mark of the route. The course reaches Newton, then Brookline, the last municipality before Boston.
The finish is on Boylston Street, at the corner of Berkeley Street. Behind the runners the roads reopen as the race goes on, at a pace of about 13 minutes 44 seconds per mile, and the finish area closes around 5:30 pm.
