Reading the route
The start is at 5 a.m. on Friday, on the village square in Vielle-Aure, at 799 m. The course then gains the Col de Bastanet at km 20.5, at 2,496 m: this is the high point. It passes close to Serpolet, then reaches La Mongie at km 35, at 1,808 m. The Col d'Aoube follows at km 48.1, at 2,370 m.
The course then reaches Pierrefitte-Nestalas, one of the two life bases, at km 74.3 and 497 m, then Cauterets at km 88.8 and 926 m. Luz-Saint-Sauveur, the other life base, comes at km 112.6, at 712 m. The longest climb of the course, 1,534 m of gain, starts at km 111.8, just before Luz-Saint-Sauveur, and ends at km 124.4. The Hourquette Nère comes next at km 141.5, at 2,451 m.
After the Hourquette Nère, the course returns to Vielle-Aure at km 163, at 799 m, the same altitude as the start. The loop totals 10,048 m of climbing and 10,048 m of descent, within a 50-hour time limit; the finish closes at 7 a.m. on Sunday. The terrain mixes drivable roads, ski slopes, mountain trails and tracks.
