Reading the route
The stage gets under way at 11:20 in Le Bourg-d'Oisans, at around 711 m. Rochetaillée comes almost at once, then the road rises past the Barrage de Grand'Maison and tops out at the Croix de Fer pass, at km 32.9, at 2,066 m. You then drop to Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, at km 60.9, at 635 m.
Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne follows at km 77.8, at 730 m, then the Col du Télégraphe at km 90.1, at 1,558 m. After the descent into Valloire, the longest climb of the course starts at km 95.3 and gains 1,228 m up to the Col du Galibier, at km 113.2. The Galibier is also the highest point, at 2,633 m.
After the Galibier, the course descends past the Col du Lautaret to La Grave, at km 132.4, at 1,488 m. It then passes the Barrage du Chambon and climbs back up to Mizoën, at km 148.1, at 1,192 m. From there, the road rises to the Col de Sarenne, at km 159.3, before reaching the finish at Alpe d'Huez, at km 168.5, at 1,787 m. In all, the stage adds up to 5,600 m of climbing.
