Reading the route
This stage leaves Gap, in the Hautes-Alpes, at 742 m of elevation. It climbs the Col Bayard at km 8.5 (1,244 m), then the Col du Noyer at km 27.7 (1,664 m). It then passes through Corps at km 55.2 (922 m), Valbonnais at km 81 (794 m) and Le Périer at km 89.8 (903 m).
The route climbs the Col d'Ornon at km 99.5, at 1,370 m, the last of the stage's three categorized climbs. The longest climb of the route follows, gaining 1,112 m from km 112.2 to km 127.7, after passing through Le Bourg-d'Oisans, up to the summit of Alpe d'Huez.
The finish is at Alpe d'Huez, in Isère, at 1,826 m, the highest point of the route. The stage runs on paved road, through high mountains, with a hors-catégorie final climb of 21 numbered hairpins. Over 127.8 km, it totals 4,143 m of climbing and 3,059 m of descent.
