Reading the route
The Grand Trail des Templiers, a 79.7 km loop from Millau, sets off at 5:10 am from Domaine St Estève, at 377 m. The route mixes forest tracks, single-track trails, rocky sections and limestone slabs, rock ledges, cliffs and karst plateaus. It reaches the Moulin de la Galinière at km 14.9, at 395 m, then Peyreleau at km 19.7, at 428 m.
Past Peyreleau comes the longest climb of the route: 515 m of gain between km 20 and km 27.3, where the trace tops out at its high point, 921 m. The descent drops to Montméjean, at km 32.4, at 621 m. Further on the route passes L'Hospitalet-du-Larzac, at km 56.4, at 765 m, then Larzac, at km 63.2, at 780 m.
The route closes its loop back at Millau: the finish sits at L'Arche du bonheur, on the Pouncho d'Agast, at km 79.7, at 773 m. Over the whole course, the elevation adds up to 2,192 m of gain and 1,797 m of loss.
