Reading the route
The Edinburgh Marathon starts at Potterrow, in front of McEwan Hall, at 10:00. The route heads to Greyfriars Kirkyard, then George IV Bridge and The Mound. It crosses Princes Street Gardens and passes the Scott Monument, then Market Street and Jeffrey Street. The Royal Mile leads to Canongate, then to the Scottish Parliament, at km 2.7.
After the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the course enters Holyrood Park for an out-and-back, with a turnaround. It then passes through Meadowbank before reaching the Portobello promenade, at km 9.7. The route continues through Joppa to Musselburgh, then on to Musselburgh Old Golf Links, at km 16.3.
The course reaches the Gosford House estate, at km 29.4, for a turnaround loop. It then heads back toward Musselburgh; nine water stations stand roughly every 5 km along the route. The finish is at Musselburgh Racecourse, by the Links, after 42.195 km. The time limit is 6 hours 30 minutes from when the last runners cross the start line, with a sweep bus.
