Reading the route
The start is at 06:00 at Erlanger Park, in Chattanooga, at 203 m, by the Tennessee River. The longest climb of the route, 390 m of gain, runs from km 1.9 to km 9.9, shortly after the start. The route then passes the highest point, at 632 m, at km 29.3, just before Covenant College.
Forest singletrack, trail networks and canyon-rim paths follow one another to the finish. Between Covenant College and the Lula Lake Land Trust, at km 42.5 (402 m), the route runs through the Moonshine Trails. It then passes Lula Falls, inside the Lula Lake Land Trust, and reaches the Cloudland Canyon Connector at km 72.6, at 595 m.
After the Cloudland Canyon Connector, the route crosses two trail networks, Five Points, then Durham Mine. It then enters Cloudland Canyon State Park, following the East Rim and West Rim trails to the finish, at km 100.7, at 534 m. In total, the course has 2,448 m of climbing and 2,117 m of descent, within an 18-hour cutoff.
