Reading the route
The route starts in Olympic Valley, California, at 5 am, at 1,902 m. It climbs straight to the highest point of the route, 2,644 m at km 5.6: the longest climb, with 742 m of gain in the opening kilometres. It then passes Lyon Ridge, Red Star Ridge, Duncan Canyon, Robinson Flat, Miller's Defeat and Dusty Corners.
It reaches Last Chance, at 1,397 m at km 68.8, then goes through Devil's Thumb and El Dorado Creek before Michigan Bluff, at 1,060 m at km 89. At km 103 it reaches Foresthill, at 598 m.
From there it passes Dardanelles, Peachstone, Ford's Bar, Rucky Chucky, Green Gate, Auburn Lake Trails, Quarry Rd, Pointed Rocks and Robie Point, finishing in Auburn, at Placer High School, at 393 m, after 161 km. Over the full route it adds up to 5,341 m of gain and 6,849 m of loss, across high mountains, canyons, forest and river crossings, within a 30-hour time limit.
