The route crosses the Pacific Crest Trail twice before climbing, late in the race, up to Sugarloaf Mountain's summit.

1 pm, at Rim Nordic Ski Area: the loop begins in full daylight. The route passes Crab Flats, then meets the Pacific Crest Trail for the first time, through alpine forest.

It meets the PCT again further on, before climbing to Deadmans Ridge and then Sugarloaf Mountain's summit, as the terrain turns to high desert.

The route then drops through Buttercup, before returning to Rim Nordic for the finish. Past 36 hours, the loop closes without waiting.
