Garmisch-Partenkirchen sees the start at 8 pm, for an overnight loop that circles the foot of the Zugspitze massif, Germany's highest peak, without ever climbing the summit itself.
The route first passes Lake Eibsee, then climbs to the Kothbachsattel pass, at 2,199 m, before dropping to Straßberghaus and Arzkasten.
It passes Pestkapelle once, before Schloss Elmau and Laubhütte, then passes it again further round the loop, in a pattern of partial back-and-forths typical of the route.
The finish is back in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. 42 hours 30 minutes of cutoff in total.

The organiser announces 167 km and 8,205 m of elevation gain for the 2026 edition. Plotrek's illustrative route, redrawn on OpenStreetMap paths, measures 163 km and 8,225 m of gain. It is a loop, with Garmisch-Partenkirchen as start and finish, Pestkapelle at km 88.9 and Schloss Elmau at km 129.5.
42 hours 30 minutes for the 2026 edition, according to the organiser's website, read on 17 September 2026. That is the time allowed to cover the announced 167 km. Start: Garmisch-Partenkirchen, at 8 pm. The time limit can change from one edition to the next; the organiser's rules prevail.
Kothbachsattel, at 2,199 m, at km 31.3 of Plotrek's route. The high point lies between two landmarks of the course: Eibsee (1,031 m, km 10.5) and Straßberghaus (1,190 m, km 52.3). The start and finish are both at 699 m. Altitudes measured on the route, with a terrain model.
1,068 m of elevation gain in one go, from km 142.1 to km 149.9 of Plotrek's route. Landmark on the way: Laubhütte (1,011 m, km 142.7). No other climb on the 163 km loop is as long. Average gradient of this section: 13.7%. It accounts for 13% of the route's elevation gain.
