Reading the route
The long route starts in Gaiole in Chianti, at 352 m, with a staggered start between 4:30 and 6:00 a.m. It passes the Castello di Brolio, then drops to Siena, at 240 m, at kilometer 36. It then climbs back toward Poggio Allodola, at 271 m, at kilometer 52.9. It alternates white gravel roads and secondary paved roads, through the Chianti hills, the Crete Senesi and the Val d'Orcia.
After Poggio Allodola, the road climbs to the route's highest point, at 624 m, at kilometer 83.7: a 493 m climb from kilometer 69.4, the longest of the day. It then descends toward Lucignano d'Asso, at 367 m, at kilometer 110, and on to Buonconvento, at 147 m, at kilometer 123.8.
From Buonconvento, the route climbs back toward Poggio Montecercone, at 293 m, at kilometer 158.3, then the village of Vagliagli, at 497 m, at kilometer 189.6. It closes its loop in Gaiole in Chianti, at 355 m, at kilometer 210.1, after a total elevation gain of 4,189 m.
