Reading the route
The start is at 12:40 in Pau, at 198 m of elevation, and the road first runs through Bizanos and Idron. You pass Lourdes at km 41, at 401 m, then go through Bagnères-de-Bigorre before reaching Capvern at km 80.2, at 615 m. Sarrancolin comes at km 98.6, at 627 m.
After Sarrancolin, the road runs through Arreau and Aspin-Aure. It then crosses the Col d'Aspin at km 117.7, at 1,489 m, and drops back down through Payolle. The longest climb of the course, +1,266 m, starts at km 130.6, near Sainte-Marie-de-Campan: it passes Gripp at km 135.4, at 1,031 m, and leads to the Col du Tourmalet at km 147.8, the high point at 2,118 m.
After the Col du Tourmalet, the road descends through Barèges to Luz-Saint-Sauveur, at km 167, at 711 m. It then rises again through Pragnères and Gèdre to the finish in Gavarnie-Gèdre, at km 186.8, at 1,383 m of elevation. In total, the course adds up to 4,150 m of climbing.
