Reading the route
The W circuit starts at Hotel Las Torres, at 126 m, in Chilean Patagonia. It is a long-distance hiking trail named for its shape: three valleys joined into a W, those of the Torres, the French valley and the Grey glacier. The route covers 65.5 km with 2,707 m of climbing.
The first out-and-back climbs past Refugio Chileno (km 4.4, at 409 m) towards the Torres and passes it again at km 13.1. The route then reaches Campamento Italiano at km 36, goes up the French valley and passes Campamento Italiano again at km 47.6, before Campamento Paine Grande at km 55.1, at 46 m.
The high point is 874 m, at km 8.5, at the end of the Torres out-and-back. The longest climb gains 690 m, from km 32.7 to km 41.8, on the French valley side. The crossing ends at Refugio Grey, at 74 m, at km 65.5, facing the Grey glacier.
