Laugavegurinn means "the hot springs road": this Icelandic Highlands trail leaves Landmannalaugar at 582 m and reaches Þórsmörk at 301 m, 52.5 km later. The tally: 1,486 m of ascent, 1,766 m of descent, from a hot-spring camp to the birch woods of the valley.

The slope starts at once: 367 m are gained before km 5.2, Brennisteinsalda shows up near km 3, then the path reaches the Hrafntinnusker plateau, its high point, 1,038 m at km 9.7. After that everything steps back down, as far as Lake Álftavatn, 612 m, near km 21.

Past Hvanngil, around km 25, the ground flattens out on the black sands of Emstrur, at km 37, 537 m, before one last long slide toward the valley. Þórsmörk closes the crossing at km 52.5, at 301 m.
