Reading the route
The Kungsleden, the "King's Trail", links Abisko to Hemavan over more than 400 km; this northern section, the most walked, starts in Abisko, 376 m, crosses the Kebnekaise massif and ends at Nikkaluokta, 502 m. The route adds up to 103.8 km, 1,534 m of ascent and 1,408 m of descent, cabin to cabin (fjällstugor).
Right out of Abisko the trail climbs: 454 m gained from km 0.2 to km 23.8, with Abiskojaure on the way, around km 14. Alesjaure comes around km 34, then the valley narrows to Tjäktja, at km 47. The Tjäktja pass, the high point at 1,131 m, is crossed at km 50.5, between the Alesjaure and Tjäktjavagge valleys, north of Kebnekaise.
On the south side the slope drops away fast: Sälka around km 59, Singi around km 71, then the Kebnekaise station around km 85, the last big landmark before the exit eastward. Nikkaluokta, 502 m, closes the route at km 103.8.
