Reading the route
Hadrian's Wall Path starts in Wallsend, at 19 m above sea level, and crosses the north of England from east to west. Opened as a National Trail in 2003, this long-distance path follows Hadrian's Wall. Our route covers 138.3 km with 1,613 m of climbing: a modest relief.
From Wallsend, the path reaches Heddon on the Wall at km 24.5, then Chollerford at km 50. It climbs towards Busy Gap (km 63.8) and Sycamore Gap (km 68.2), then drops to Gilsland at km 83.6 and Walton at km 96.8. The plain leads to Carlisle, at km 115.1, then Burgh by Sands, at km 125.9.
The high point of the route, 335 m, lies at km 71.1, between Peel Gap and Caw Gap. The longest climb gains 263 m, from km 8.1 to km 42.9, very drawn out. The finish is in Bowness-on-Solway, at km 138.3, 8 m above sea level, on the edge of the estuary.
