Reading the route
Alta Via 1 is the first of the great « Alta Via » routes of the Dolomites, opened in the 1960s: it runs from Lago di Braies, at 1,507 m, to La Pissa, on the edge of Belluno, at 476 m. The route measures 115.7 km, climbs 6,949 m and drops 7,980 m, hut to hut, staying in high mountains until the last few kilometres.
The northern half opens with an 884 m ascent to the Forcella Sora Forno, then passes the Biella and Fanes huts. The Lagazuoi is the summit of the crossing, at 2,687 m: the massif holds the tunnels and galleries of a First World War front. Past the Passo Falzarego, the path reaches the Rifugio Nuvolau (2,497 m), before dropping to the Passo Giau.
The southern half skirts the Civetta by the Città di Fiume and Coldai huts, before heading for the Carestiato, beneath the Moiazza towers. The Pramperet comes before the Forcella De Zita Sud, the last big pass at 2,325 m. A long descent remains toward La Pissa, where the path leaves the high mountains.
