The Overland Track starts at Ronny Creek, at 925 m, below Cradle Mountain in Tasmania. It is a hut-to-hut crossing through moorland, forest and gaps, adding up to 77.6 km and 1,932 m of climbing before it ends on the shore of Lake St Clair, at Cynthia Bay.

The trail passes Marions Lookout at km 3.2, then Waterfall Valley Hut at km 10.7 and Windermere Hut at km 18.1. It reaches New Pelion Hut at km 33.1, Pelion Gap at km 37.5 and Kia Ora Hut at km 41.5, before Du Cane Gap at km 49.1, Narcissus Hut at km 61.1 and Echo Point Hut at km 67.4.

The high point of the route, at 1,270 m of altitude, comes at km 4.6, in the opening climb. The longest climb gains 386 m between km 29.1 and km 37.5, up to Pelion Gap at 1,126 m. The crossing ends at Cynthia Bay, at 760 m, at the end of Lake St Clair, after the final descent.
