Reading the route
The Mont-Blanc Marathon starts from the place du Triangle de l'Amitié in Chamonix, at 6:45, in waves. The route passes through Les Bois, Le Lavancher and La Rosière. It reaches Argentière at km 10.9, then Le Planet and Le Tour. The route then rises toward the Aiguillette des Posettes, the highest point of the course at 2,166 m, at km 18.
After the summit, the route drops by the col des Posettes toward Vallorcine, at km 23.9. Le Tour, Vallorcine and La Flégère are the three cutoff checkpoints, for a course limited to 10 hours at most. The route then crosses the col des Montets, Le Béchar and La Joux. Part of this section passes through the Aiguilles Rouges nature reserve, before rising again toward La Flégère, at km 35.5.
The route then continues through Les Échelles, Charlanon and the sentier des Gardes. Le Jora precedes the return to Chamonix, which closes the loop after 42 km. The finish is at the place du Triangle de l'Amitié, as at the start. The race runs in semi-self-sufficiency, with mandatory gear, and includes three full aid stations plus the one at the finish. A backup route is planned in case of bad weather.
