Reading the route
The course connects Marathon to Athens: the name of the start town is also the name of the distance itself. It runs point-to-point, from the village of Marathon into the heart of the capital, over 42.2 km of city streets and paved road.
The start goes off at 8:30, in Marathon, near the Tomb of the Marathon Runners. The route first follows the coast, then turns inland and reaches Néa Mákri, at km 10.1.
From there it continues through the Rafina junction, then through Pikermi, crossed close to the halfway point, at km 21.8. The course then runs through Pallini, Gerakas, the Stavros junction, Agia Paraskevi, Chalandri and Cholargos, heading toward Athens.
The finish is at the Panathenaic Stadium, in the heart of Athens. Runners must reach it in under 8 hours to be officially classified, within the time set by the organizers.
