The Tour des Écrins starts from Bourg-d'Oisans, at 726 m, and returns there: a long-distance loop on the GR 54, also called the Tour de l'Oisans et des Écrins. The route measures 190.3 km with 11,874 m of ascent around the massif, overlooked by the Barre des Écrins.

The route climbs first towards Huez (km 8.5) and the Col de Sarenne (km 16.4), passes Besse (km 23.5) and crosses the Col du Souchet at km 31.9. La Grave comes at km 40.7, followed by the Col d'Arsine (km 54.5), Le Monêtier-les-Bains (km 64.7), the Col de l'Eychauda (km 70.7) and Vallouise (km 83.9).

The high point, 2,756 m, is the Col de l'Aup Martin at km 102.5. It tops the biggest ascent: 1,593 m gained between km 84.5 and km 102.5. The loop then crosses the Vallonpierre, Vaurze and Muzelle passes (km 168.5), before dropping to the finish at Bourg-d'Oisans, at 730 m.
