Reading the route
The Chemin de Stevenson, or GR 70, starts in Le Puy-en-Velay at 640 m and reaches Alès through the Velay, the Gévaudan and the Cévennes. The route covers 263.7 km with 7,970 m of climbing. In 1878, Robert Louis Stevenson walked through the Cévennes in 12 days with the donkey Modestine.
Le Monastier-sur-Gazeille lies at km 19.3, Pradelles at km 57.7 and Langogne at km 63.7. The path then reaches Le Bleymard at km 140.3, followed by the Sommet de Finiels. After Le Pont-de-Montvert (km 159.9) it crosses the Col du Sapet (km 173) and drops to Florac Trois Rivières (km 184.7).
The high point is the Sommet de Finiels, at 1,697 m, at km 149.1. The longest climb gains 628 m, from km 139.8 to km 149.1. Past the Col de la Pierre Plantée (km 212.3) and Saint-Jean-du-Gard (km 239.1), the crossing ends in Alès, at 127 m, at km 263.7.
