The John Muir Trail starts at Happy Isles, at 1,248 m in Yosemite Valley, and reaches Mount Whitney along the crest of the Sierra Nevada. Named in honour of the naturalist John Muir, this long-distance trail covers 335.4 km on the route, with 13,890 m of climbing.

After Cathedral Pass (km 26.7), the trail crosses Donohue Pass at km 56.6, then strings together Silver Pass (km 129.1), Selden Pass (km 160.7) and Muir Pass (km 204.5). Mather Pass (km 240.1), Pinchot Pass (km 255.9) and Glen Pass (km 282.1) follow, before Forester Pass at km 301.6.

The high point is the summit itself: 4,412 m at km 335.4, where the trail ends. The longest climb opens the route, gaining 1,712 m between km 0 and km 18.8. The final stretch climbs to Mount Whitney, first ascended in 1873.
