The trail starts in Chamonix, at 1,039 m, below Mont Blanc, and ends in Zermatt, under the Matterhorn, crossing the valleys of the Valais. It is a long-distance walking route, the Walker's Haute Route: 205.5 km and 14,051 m of climbing from end to end.

After Trient (km 23.6) and Champex-Lac (km 38.3), the trail drops to Le Châble (km 52.3), then climbs to the Cabane Mont Fort (km 64.7). It goes on through Arolla (km 94), Zinal (km 127.9), Gruben (km 150.1), Sankt Niklaus (km 167.1) and the Europahütte (km 179).

The high point, 2,959 m, is the Col de Prafleuri, at km 73.6. The longest climb gains 1,447 m between km 102.6 and km 112.5, up to the Col de Torrent. The trail ends in Zermatt, at 1,611 m, at km 205.5.
